Mahatma Gandhi Marine National Park, located at a distance of 30 km to south-west of Port Blair, is also known as Wandur National Park. Comprising 15 islands, this national park was established on 24th May, 1983. Sprawling over an area of 280 square km, the national park is famous for its rich collection of coral reefs, which include leptoseris, tubipora, gorgonians, porites and acropora. Fungia, pocillopora and montipora are some of the other coral reefs located within this national park. The marine life of this national park includes starfish, sharks, coral reefs, fishes and turtles. In addition, it also comprises sea anemones, shells, salt water crocodiles and water snakes. On the other hand, terrestrial life available in this national park includes mammals, fruit bat, spotted dear, civet and wild bear. The sky is covered with the birds like dove, kingfisher, white bellied sea eagle, parakeet, tern, reef heron and local teal. Water and land are shared by reptiles like vine snake, king cobra, krait and python. Tourists visiting this national park can also engage in activities like deep water scuba diving.
Some of the rarest species like Nicobar pigeon, the Andaman pig and the Andaman gecko can be seen in the Mini Zoo which is situated at Haddo, off the Delanipur-Chattam Road in Port Blair. There are around 200 species of birds and animals in the mini zoo. The zoo is within the premises of the Forest Museum and can be visited in the same trip as the Forest Museum. There is a crocodile farm inside the zoo which is a breeding place for crocodiles which are later released into the coastal mangrove swamps. The popularity of the Mini Zoo is attributed to the crocodile farming and breeding programs. These animals can be later seen in the water surrounding the green forests. Some of the trees that are found are the padauk, rosewood, marble wood, etc.
The Marina Park and Aquarium lies near another famous attraction, known as Water Sports Complex. This park is counted among the popular tourist attractions of Andaman. Surrounded by numerous trees and plants, it has become a famous picnic spot. Tourists can also visit the aquarium which is located in the vicinity of this park. This aquarium is home to several species of sea fish and turtles.
Chidiya Tapu is located 25 km from Port Blair and is a tiny village in the southernmost tip of South Andaman. It is also known as the bird island. The region has a number of green mangroves and a lush forest cover. Birds are the major attraction here. There is a forest guest house at the top of the hillock that provides sunset views as well as views of the islands beyond Chidiya Tapu. The water in this area is full of colourful corals which makes it suitable for snorkelling.
